Bio / Resume
Currently a freelance photojournalist Minneapolis, MN, Judy has been a staff photographer for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, the San Jose Mercury News and The Hartford Courant.
Judy and her family experienced a huge change in their lives when her husband decided to leave his job as a photo editor and enter medical school in his late 30’s. Intrigued by what it took to mold a doctor, she embarked upon a multimedia project that followed the University of Minnesota Medical School Class of 2004 through four years of training.
I've always tried to capture those little moments in my photos that would allow the viewer to feel as if he or he or she had stepped into the same room with the subject. The growth of the web has opened another door for me and recording audio has added a new dimension to the projects I shoot. The emotional impact of hearing the subjects’ voices is phenomenal.”
Judy moved to Connecticut for four years during her husband’s residency and there she produced a series of five audio slideshows for the University of CT Academic Health Center’s Orthopedic Residency program, a photojournalistic approach which involved placing wireless microphones on surgeons, shooting fifteen surgical procedures and following residents in clinic as they worked with patients.
This same approach has led Judy to document her sister Ellen Griesedieck’s American Mural Project. The two have embarked on various state projects with Ellen leading the way and Judy producing audio slideshows for the AMP website, an ongoing project that will eventually take them to all fifty states.
Her freelance work has included assignments for clients such as Time, Newsweek, Business Week, Smithsonian, People, the New York Times, and USA Today. During her career she has covered events such as the Calgary Olympics, the Democratic Convention, several presidential campaigns, three Super Bowls and numerous documentary photo essays. She has participated in numerous book projects such as Christmas In America, A Day in the Life of China, A Day in the Life of Italy, A Circle of Life, The Power to Heal, Baseball In America, 24 Hours in Cyberspace, The History of Mothers and Daughters and America At Home, published in April 2008.
She is married to Dr. Michael Healy and has a daughter Taylor, age 16.
